Managing Director, Uganda – African Clean Energy

We are African Clean Energy. We are a rapidly growing B Corp enterprise focused on enabling decentralised access to clean energy for households in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. We are currently operating in Lesotho, Cambodia, and Uganda. Our mission is to eliminate the worst forms of poverty on a platform of clean energy and smartphone technology.

Are you passionate about creating positive change and sustainable impact? Are you a motivated leader with experience in East Africa? We are looking for someone to take the lead in our most rapidly growing market, Uganda, with potential to expand into surrounding markets.

Job Description

As we scale up operations across Uganda, we must ensure consistency and efficiency in order to maintain high service levels as we expand our customer portfolio. With three main revenue streams (hardware, fuel and carbon offset) the balance must be maintained across all KPIs. We require strong and capable leadership to ensure that company strategy and policy is being applied effectively in all contexts by the people who are most capable to apply them. Our experienced team has the skills and dedication to achieve the task at hand, but would benefit from the addition of someone with the experience to motivate, lead and guide them to the next level.

As the Managing Director of ACE Energy Solutions Uganda (ACE Uganda), you are responsible for all operations of ACE Uganda including results, human resources and administration. You are the eyes, ears and moral compass of African Clean Energy (ACE) on the ground and ACE Management relies on you to ensure the company is being run in a way that aligns with our Code of Ethics and strategic vision.

You will be responsible for ensuring we have the right people in the team to assure our success, managing the senior team in Uganda, aligning all operations to the global strategy and keeping the global ACE Board well informed.

This role will be based in Uganda only, no remote work possible.

Internal Roles and Responsibilities: 

  • Projects and expansion/ commercial growth/operational strategy/partnerships
  • Recruiting (Management level, with oversight on recruitment of all other levels)
  • Training and skills development
  • Human Resources/ general admin/ office management
  • Communication between departments (Management/project management) +
  • Incentive Structures, financial and non-financial incentives for all levels below senior management
  • Reporting to HQ/ Investors
  • Data integrity, analysis, compliance

External Roles and Responsibilities: 

  • Stakeholder engagement (government, NGO, Community leaders)
  • Compliance/legal/tax/contracting/governance

Desired Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years experience in a senior leadership role
  • Experience in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a strong preference for experience in East Africa
  • Tertiary degree in at least one of the following:
    • Finance; Accounting; Legal; Engineering; Software; Business Administration
  • Experienced and comfortable in data analysis, BI and CRM systems (Salesforce)
  • Fluent or Native English speaker and writer, additional language is a bonus
