BURN Design Lab: Cookstove Testing Laboratory Manager and Design Engineer

Burn Design Lab, headquartered on Vashon Island, WA is offering a manager level position to a clear thinking, creative, graduate in science or mechanical/industrial engineering, who is ready to make lasting contributions to the development and manufacturing of leading-edge biomass burning cookstoves. We are looking for someone who enjoys working both independently and with others to develop creative solutions to challenging problems. Burn Design Lab will provide a modest salary to the selected candidate. Burn Design Lab is a U.S. based internationally focused non-profit organization dedicated to the improvement of lives and the environment through research, design, and development of outstanding cookstoves and fuels.

The successful candidate will be engaged in some or all of the following:

  • Managing cookstove testing laboratory operation, personnel, programs, maintenance, and organization
  • Oversee and participate in performance, combustion, safety, durability, and emissions testing of cookstoves and presenting results to the team
  • Analyzing biomass fuels for heating value, moisture, and other characteristics.
  • Documentation and improvement of testing methods and ISO protocols
  • Assuring regular & accurate calibration of laboratory equipment and making improvements to laboratory systems & equipment
  • Testing materials and conducting material research.
  • Training others in laboratory operations.
  • Working collaboratively with others to develop conceptual designs of both cookstoves and cookstove manufacturing equipment & systems.
  • Applying proven industrial engineering concepts to cookstove manufacturing in less developed countries.
  • Building prototypes from sheet metal (forming, spot welding, and general metal fabrication), ceramic, refractory, & other materials.
  • International travel to & work in one or more low- or middle-income countries.

The selected candidate will report to the Director of Engineering and manage 1-3 personnel in the laboratory.

Experience:

Applicants should have the following experience and aptitudes:

  • Completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in science or engineering
  • 1-3 years of experience in a laboratory setting
  • Collecting, organizing, & analyzing data.
  • Proficiency with Excel Macros, PPT, and Word.
  • Significant laboratory & report writing experience
  • Strong organization skills and consistent attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

Preferred:

  • Management of small teams in the laboratory setting and/or project management
  • 1-3 years of experience in engineering product development
  • Competency in Fusion360 &/or other CAD tools
  • Hands-on maintenance, fabrication, &/or construction experience
  • Eagerness to learn hands-on, academically, and from experienced mentors.

Start Date: October 2024

Compensation: $60-75k / year, depending upon qualification

Location: This position is on-site at BDL’s laboratory on Vashon Island, state of Washington,

U.S.A. Proof of authorization to work in the U.S.A. required.
