Heat Exposure from Traditional Cooking Practices: A Mixed-Methods Study of Women’s Health in Nepal
Introduction:
Extreme heat exposure from traditional cooking practices poses a serious threat to the health and well-being of women, particularly in climate-vulnerable settings. While outdoor heat exposure is well documented, less attention has been paid to indoor heat exposure during cooking—especially in poorly ventilated kitchens. This study uses a mixed-methods approach to assess the extent of women’s heat exposure in Nepal and its physical and mental health impacts. Environmental sensors tracked kitchen temperature and humidity, while in-depth interviews provided insight into women’s lived experiences and coping strategies.
