Mission

Schutter Energy is a social enterprise providing healthy, reliable and affordable energy that does not harm the environment, by installing Takamoto Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) Biogas systems as the solution for rural energy poverty. Building on two years of experience installing traditional masonry biogas systems in Kenya, Schutter Energy Ltd, through the Takamoto Biogas brand, uses modern manufacturing methods, smart metering and mobile money in a novel design that offers clean and accessible renewable energy to rural families.

Clean Cooking Activities

Schutter Energy Ltd has developed a biogas energy solution that is affordable, reliable, clean and healthy by creating a Pay As You Go (PAYG) biogas system that fits the current household energy budget of smallholder farmers.®  We install, own and maintain our locally built biogas system; the family pays for the gas they use and the system also provides high quality biofertilizer (increasing crop yields by up to 100%) – all for a usage-linked fee reducing energy costs by 10%-15%/month.®

Our PAYG Biogas Model has the potential to help thousands of farming families out of energy poverty whilst keeping carbon emissions low by making renewable energy more accessible. In Kenya alone, the model has the potential to benefit the 9 million family members of 1.8 million dairy families who have more than one cow and access to water.®

Partnership

Our PAYG model is a product of many years of learning, drawing on experience in biogas and more generally in working with small-scale farmers across Africa. We have now been installing our PAYG Biogas systems in Central Kenya since May 2013. As well as contributing this knowledge and experience to the partnership with Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, we also hope to learn from other organizations and enterprises working around renewable energy, specifically biogas, and using new, innovative technology that helps meet the energy needs of small scale farmers without compromising the environment.
