Clean Cooking Activities

Camco has extensive experience on community consultation, local capacity building and training, market studies and appraisals, feasibility studies for Renewable Energy (RE) product development, and business assistance. Camco is recognised in Africa as a centre of excellence and expertise in the training and design of solar PV technology, clean cookstoves, sustainable charcoal, and wind systems. In relation to charcoal and clean cookstove fuels, Camco has carried out a number of studies in the region, including a UNDP/GEF funded study entitled “Overcoming barriers to introduction of improved charcoal kilns in Uganda;” a UNDP funded study on “How to Promote a Systems Approach to Sustainable Charcoal Production and Use in Malawi." We also developed a ground-breaking national charcoal study in Kenya which informed the development of the Kenya Charcoal Policy and regulation, funded by the UK government, as well as an analysis of Kenya’s charcoal value chain. Camco also led an East Africa biomass and briquetting study funded by the government of Finland. On the implementation side, Camco has also been involved in the promotion of sustainable charcoal at all levels, including actual project management (introduction of modified casamance and the half orange brick kiln), and developing sustainable forestry for charcoal production and standards in Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania. Camco has also been involved in the development and/or review of biomass policy and legislation in Africa.

Partnership

Camco will provide technical assistance for the programme. This will be done in collaboration with distinguished research institutions, including institutions of higher learning. Camco will draw upon its wide range of partners in the region who will inform the stakeholder engagement process. Our competence and diverse experience has promoted the establishment of strong links with public and private sector professionals, as well as scientific and academic institutions working in the fields of natural resource management, climate change, sustainable agriculture, biomass, Land Use and Forestry (ABIOLUF), renewable energy and REDD/REDD+. As a result, we have regionally and internationally built a national and international multidisciplinary client base.
