Clean Cooking Activities

The organisation works for indigenous communities in Odisha, the major fuel source for cooking is mainly wood. Around 99.8% of the families in the target area depend on wood cookstoves which are the basic, traditionally styled versions. On a pilot phase the organisation inducted a new technology adopted from TIDE, Bangalore called SARALA Woodstoves. The Sarala woodstoves are closer to the traditional wood stoves and are readily accepted. More over, the kitchens had 90% less smoke, providing women and children a choke-free environment. With fewer walks to the forests, and with 40% more efficiency than its predecessor, the technology is widely being accepted with minimal maintenance costs. The construction of these woodstoves are localised and generate employment to landless women and men. The skills needed for this technology are basic and can be performed by many local women and men post-training.

Partnership

The IRDWSI, with its mission statement, emphasizes a cleaner environment, a safer future, and a better livelihood option. We see our role more of an implementer in the field sector that exemplifies the transformation that could happen post-installations of cookstoves. The IRDWSI can also be a host to different agencies, students, scholars, and landless women and children to understand the concept of natural resources, mapping, and management. The organisation also has been a part of many transitions technically and emotionally and would be great to share some of these success stories.
