Clean Cooking Activities

SustainEarth is a social enterprise striving to find energy solutions for the rural areas. Although our agenda is to address all the rural energy issues like clean energy for cooking, lighting, irrigation etc., the present focus is on providing clean cooking solutions to the households who keep cattle. In this regard, SustainEarth provides technology, credit linkages, product support and training to all our product users in rural areas. India is a cattle rich country which is self-sufficient in milk production and consumption. According the Livestock census figures of Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Ministry of Agriculture of Government of India, India has 304 million cattle and buffaloes combined in 2007. And in 2010, 14.7 % of the world's cattle and 57.3 % of the world's buffaloes are from India according to the FAO statistics. India has a rural population of 833 million living in 168 million rural households across 0.6 million villages. The total numbers of rural households with cattle are 60 million as per National Sample Survey Organization of Govt. of India.

The best way to provide clean cooking energy for the millions of these households with cattle is through biogas systems. Biogas systems help in multiple ways like providing cleaner fuel that does not cause indoor air pollution, help in managing the animal waste thus helping in keeping the cattle yard clean and hygienic and also provides valuable bio-fertilizer full of nutrients thus promoting use of organic fertilizer. In a broader sense, these systems also have advantages like decreasing the burden of depending on fossil fuels like LPG and Kerosene, reducing the GHG emissions that arise from burning the firewood and other biomass for cooking and eliminating the deforestation.

Till now, we have installed very few newly designed prototypes of biogas systems in rural areas of Andhra Pradesh state and Karnataka state with the help of other like-minded organizations. The villages we have selected for our operations in the next phase of installations are located in Chittoor District of Andhra Pradesh state
