Clean Cooking Activities

Save lives, improve livelihoods, empower women, and preserve the environment by creating a thriving global market for clean and efficient cookstoves and fuels-a strategic mission of The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves. I from the Centre for Reproductive Health of icddr,b have received the Grand Challenges Canada's Rising Stars in Global Health award, funded by the Canadian government. My research project, titled Simple Inexpensive Safety Kitchen and Low-Birth-Weight in Resource-poor Setting: A Randomized Controlled Trial is designed to reduce women's exposure to biomass fuel during cooking. Biomass fuels are closely linked with low-birth-weight, which has been found to cause 28% of all neonatal deaths. I have transformed the ordinary cooking stove, used in rural households in most developing countries, into a simple and environmental friendly solution - a locally-made extremely simple inexpensive prefabricated model, a “100-dollar-kitchen†($100Kc) with clean-combustion improved cookstove that could reduce low-birth-weight in rural settings. The awarded study will be conducted to measure the impact of environmental factors (biomass fuels exposure) on rural poor pregnant women. Moreover, the study objectives -to identify the global knowledge gaps around IAP interventions and its potential contribution in improving adverse pregnancy outcomes in the resource-poor countries are also in line to the forum policy. The community participation in the study in promoting the $100Kc to the rural communities will induce change community attitudes about their appropriate roles, knowledge and decision making in cooking practices. Poor rural women will be the entrepreneur of the $100Kc which made employment opportunities in future and thus generate income. Therefore, the most important component of this forum that visits to cookstove testing lab and women entrepreneurship program will give me more hands-on experiences that could be helpful for our ongoing project implementation.

Partnership

I will use Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) for capacity building to enable community members/stakeholders to address their priority needs and concerns through the planning, implementing, and evaluating stages of my ongoing awarded study activities focusing on the area of environmental, maternal and child health. The facilitation of the participatory process will transfer skills and knowledge to institution and community members including skill of tools development, analysis of information, problem-solving and knowledge on the relevant topics which I will gather and learn from the Forum. Capacity building will be conducted through a series of workshops. The workshop will follow the stages where an institution will be capable to design, plan and implement their intervention. In addition, they will be trained for generating information through proper utilization of existing data to revise and adaptation of appropriate activities. These workshops will discuss on extraction of key findings from the exhausted information list collected by the study. In these workshops special emphasis will be given to future collaboration with other organizations.
