What Next? Delivering the Vision from the IEA Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa
On May 14, 2024, the IEA hosted the Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa, co-chaired by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania H.E. Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, the Prime Minister of Norway H.E. Jonas Gahr Støre, the President of the African Development Bank Group Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina and the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency Dr. Fatih Birol. The Summit mobilized a striking USD $2.2 billion in pledges for clean cooking access in Africa from governments and the private sector, and brought forward the Clean Cooking Declaration that states: “Clean cooking is a solvable development challenge that will have a positive impact on the lives of millions of the poorest people on earth, predominately for those in Sub‑Saharan Africa” and calls for “the swift implementation of the commitments made at the Summit, and the establishment of a follow-up mechanism to take stock of progress against those commitments.”
Following this historic event, the CCAC Household Energy Hub will come together to hear from the Summit organizers along with key countries and organizations leading the way. The focus of the discussion will be on actions CCAC Partners can take to advance clean cooking in the context of the NDC Revision process, the CCAC Clean Air Flagship, and the new Africa Clean Air Programme, which is being developed as called for in the UNEA6 Resolution Promoting regional cooperation on air pollution to improve air quality globally.
