Chef Sanjeev Kapoor and the Clean Cooking Alliance to demonstrate importance of clean cooking

Mumbai, January 29, 2019 – The Clean Cooking Alliance (the “Alliance”) and Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, one of the most celebrated faces of Indian cuisine and a member of the Alliance Chef Corps, will convene in Mumbai this week to highlight the importance of clean cooking. Joined by Alliance CEO Dymphna van der Lans, Chef Kapoor will hold a demonstration on 31 January to showcase innovative clean cooking technologies.

The demonstration, which will be held outdoors at the Taj Lands End Hotel in Mumbai, will be complemented by a discussion between Chef Kapoor and Mrs. van der Lans about the progress being made in the clean cooking sector – both in India and at a global level – as well as the persistent challenges.

Chef Kapoor’s event will kick-off a six-month behavior change campaign in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat to promote the use of cleaner, more modern stoves and fuels. Supported by the Alliance, Tata Trusts, and other partners, the campaign will raise awareness of the benefits of clean cooking, with the goal of influencing consumer purchasing decisions and encouraging the consistent use of clean cooking technologies. The campaign aims to reach 35,000 households in each state through a variety of evidence-based communications strategies, including hosting cooking competitions, airing informational videos through mobile movie theaters, and working closely with village and district leaders to share messages.

“This has been a great opportunity for me to exercise my social responsibilities and raise awareness about the harmful health, climate, environment, and gender impacts of cooking over polluting, open fires and inefficient stoves,” Chef Kapoor said, speaking about how he has leveraged his role as a culinary expert to encourage people to live healthier lives through clean cooking.

“The Alliance is delighted to be working with Chef Kapoor and other partners to support India’s ambitious efforts toward universal access to clean cooking,” said Mrs. van der Lans. “Together, we can accelerate this transition and help achieve benefits like cleaner air, better health, and lower household expenses on cooking fuels.”
