Clean Cooking at Carbon Expo 2016

At the Carbon Expo 2016, a global gathering for hundreds of representatives from NGOs, financial and research institutions, and different governments to discuss the future of growing carbon markets, the Alliance and its partners made an appearance to further the cookstoves mission. The expo was held in Cologne, Germany this year with over 220 speakers from around the world, drawing in a crowd of about 2,000 visitors from over 100 different countries.  After three days of various discussions and events, the expo ended with a strong show of continued commitment to the future of carbon markets.

The Alliance and Gold Standard Foundation had the privilege of hosting a standing-room only side event: “Gold Standard 3.0: Driving finance to cookstove projects for climate, health and gender”. The event brought together experts on results-based finance and focused on the potential for cookstove companies to use Gold Standard 3.0 to quantify climate, health and gender impacts in a results-based financing framework that will help channel investment in greater volumes.

In addition, the Alliance also had its own centrally-located booth at the expo where, with the financial support of Shell, we had the amazing opportunity to communicate with and educate over 150 visitors on what we are doing to create a thriving market for clean and efficient cooking solutions and the positive impact this is having all over the world. Partnering with our co-exhibitors, Gold Standard, Envirofit, Impact Carbon, Project Gaia, and Nexus, this public platform gave The Alliance the chance to directly speak to these visitors and promote a key initiative in the climate change space this year. We were also able to share our work with Gold Standard Foundation on its 3.0 methodology which, in addition to carbon emissions, certifies health and gender co-benefits associated with clean cookstoves.

Speakers included:

  • Matt Spannagle, independent consultant on climate + development (moderator)
  • Peter George, Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves
  • Marion Verles, Gold Standard
  • Jeroen Blom, BIX Fund
  • Dean Thomson, World Vision Australia
  • Nathalie Roth, representative from the Government of Luxembourg

Thank you to all of our friends and partners for making this year’s Carbon Expo a great success!
