Expenditure Of Low-Income Households On Energy: Evidence From Africa and Asia

Using data obtained in nationally administered household expenditure
surveys, this study investigates the shares of household expenditure devoted to energy at different income levels for Bangladesh, Cambodia,
India, Indonesia, Kenya, Pakistan, Thailand, Uganda, and Vietnam. The paper also examines expenditures on motorized passenger
transport and food, two items for which the price of oil is an important
component of their cost structure and which are consequential in
the budget of poor households. The income levels are based on per capita
expenditure, with the country’s population divided into five groups
containing the same number of people in each.
