Factors Influencing Adoption and Use – China

This report presents the results of a systematic review of Chinese language literature regarding the key enablers and barriers influencing the adoption of improved stoves and clean fuels. A recent review commissioned by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and registered with the Evidence for Policy and Practice Information and Co-ordinating Centre (EPPI-Centre) at the University of Liverpool reviewed 101 studies across Asia, Africa and Latin America to identify the key enablers and barriers influencing the adoption of improved stoves and clean fuel. This review, conducted using state-of-the-art qualitative and quantitative approaches, employed a comprehensive and systematic search strategy with one major limitation: the study did not include Chinese language peer-reviewed literature (although all available English-language studies of this experience were included). Given that China conducted the world’s largest cookstove program in the 1980s-1990s with over 180 million improved stoves disseminated and the historical lack of publication of results from Chinese research in the English language literature, a complementary review of the Chinese language literature evaluating adoption within the Chinese context was warranted
