Organization

Afghan Shams Solar Energy Company

Mission

We sell solar cookers, water heaters and food dryers to the people of Afghanistan to provide them a clean cooking alternative to burning wood, dung and coal. Our goal is to support a renewable Afghan economy, reduce the cutting down of our few remaining trees and offer a smoke free way to cook, dry food and heat water on all of Afghanistan's 300 sunny days each year. We want to provide green job opportunities for both men and women in the field of manufacturing, marketing, packing and instructing the customers.

Other Organizational Expertise

Our expertise is knowledge of the market and environment in our very poor, very isolated, war torn country, which has an abundance of solar energy and a diminishing number of trees. We know how the Afghan people cook, what kinds of foods they cook and which solar cookers are the most practical for them to use during both hot and cold weather.

Clean Cooking Activities

We have 5 men for manufacturing and 2 for marketing. 5 ladies do the packing on a part time basis. Our solar cookers are manufactured in Kabul, in our own workshop. I have all equipment and machinery including hydrolic press for manufacturing of our solar cookers, solar water heaters and fruit driers. Our customers are people from different part of Afghanistan especially Bamyan province, Ghazni province and Ghor province, but also from the rest of Afghanistan. We sell two types of parabolic solar cookers: one with mylar tape which costs around $75, and one with a mirror surface which costs around $100. We also sell a blackened pressure cooker and a blackened teapot for increased solar absorption.

Partnership

I would like to apply for a Spark Fund Grant to help me expand my business with better marketing in order to make Afghans aware of the benefits of solar energy for cooking. Our company needs help with marketing. We also need help with creating new designs and with financing to purchase materials in advance for our manufacturing. We would like to hire more workers and we would like to be able to advertise our products on TV and purchase permits from the government so we can demonstrate our products to the public.
