Clean Cooking Activities

In 2011 we signed a contract with the Secretary of Social Development in Baja California Sur (SEDESOL-BCS) for the acquisition, distribution, installation and education of 1,400 Clean Cookstoves.®  The EcoZoom “La Mera-Mera†stoves were distributed throughout all 5 municipalities of the state: Los Cabos, La Paz, Loreto, Comondú and Mulegé.
®
This government contract was successfully fulfilled, benefitting more than 5,600 people in both marginalized and extremely marginalized communities.
®
Over 1,350 women were trained in the correct use and maintenance of the Ecozoom “La Mera-Mera†Clean Cookstoves.®  The three key objectives of this training included: 1) Elimination of smoke from the kitchen area, resulting in an improvement in the health of women and children; 2) Reduction of the quantity of fuel needed to prepare meals decreasing local firewood consumption up to 70% thus minimizing environmental impact; 3) Saving of time previously dedicated to collecting firewood thus giving women more time to undertake other activities.

Partnership

During the distribution, installation and training process of the 1,400 Ecozoom “La Mera-Mera†stoves we encountered women across the state who cooked with a variety of different Clean Cookstoves including Patsari, Lorena, Solar and Global.®  With this in mind we propose the following measures in order to evaluate, on site, Clean Cookstoves success thus providing invaluable information needed for the development of this global market, (the primary objective of this project):
®
1. Create and carry out a survey to help determine levels of acceptance or rejection of the stoves on behave of the beneficiary that provides insight about user habits in the transition to clean Cookstoves and/or offers explanations for the rejection of the new technology. The survey will answer questions such as:
®·® ® ® ® ® ® ® ®  Why the user accepted the new stove to replace traditional cooking methods,
®·® ® ® ® ® ® ® ®  Why the Clean Cookstoves did not replace original cooking methods,
®·® ® ® ® ® ® ® ®  What key factors contributed to these end results,
®·® ® ® ® ® ® ® ®  What can be done to facilitate higher Clean Cookstoves acceptance rates,
®·® ® ® ® ® ® ® ®  Have other family members expressed interest in obtaining their own Clean Cookstoves.
®
2. Monitoring of 420 previously installed Ecozoom Clean Cookstoves well as 84 stoves of varying models (Patsari, Lorena, Solar and Global) in order to evaluate and compare their effectiveness from the user's perspective. The following categories will be evaluated:
®·® ® ® ® ® ® ® ®  Stove Efficiency: includes, but not limited to, heating rates after prolonged use, heat retention, smoke management and expulsion and fuel consumption rates.
®·® ® ® ® ® ® ® ®  Maintenance Issues: ease of maintenance and general user maintenance habits including user repairs and modifications and durability of materials of original materials. Quality of Life Concerns (in particular the women and children of the family): increase of free time, less stove issues and safer kitchen environment.
®
3. Implementation and management of a Regional Testing and Knowledge Center for the Gulf of California (Colima, Sinaloa, Sonora, Baja California and Baja California Sur) to carry out a regional analysis of the Clean Cookstoves effectiveness. The survey and monitoring results complied in points one and two will help determine the plausibility of the presence of this Regional Testing and Knowledge Center where the experiences of the stove users and technical knowledge can be shared helping to further develop the global market.
