Clean Cooking Activities

At CSIR-NEERI, we have been working on identifying and addressing several issues related to rural indoor emissions, with CSIR-800 projects under the 11th and 12th plan of Government of India, since 2007. We have tried to address critical issues restricting the sustainability of improved cook stove through extensive interactions with stakeholders, especially users and come up with an approach named NEERDHUR, which addresses the adoption and sustainability related challenges of ICS. This approach includes:
• An improved cook stove design with emphasis on user preferences to cut back HAP levels in a practical way. The user preferences are addressed by providing Multi fuel utility (biomass, charcoal, agro residue etc.), Hybrid operation modes (optionally Natural or Forced draft in same ICS) and supporting both top and bottom fuel loading
• Low cost and easy fuel processing by chopping of firewood in to small pieces, sun drying and proper storage
• Installation of low cost stack (chimney) for effective ventilation coupled with an adequate cooking platform to reduce exposure
• IEC training to maximize the benefits and to achieve economic returns through fuel saving.
Under this initiative, over 100 NEERDHUR ICS prototypes have been developed and about 50 units were deployed in a village (Mohgaon Jhilpi) near Nagpur, India. These ICS were promoted by respective representative from well-known community organisation in the village to ensure rapid adoption.

Partnership

With the experience and expertise in the area of rural energy as well as indoor and ambient air quality monitoring and management, we would like to get actively involved in R&D as well as field based studies related to adoption of cook stoves, their environmental and health impacts as well as sustainability aspects. NEERI as a leading Indian National Institute in the areas of Environmental Science & Engineering is also an advisory to National Policy issues as well as to the Judiciary on various important areas. NEERI is actively pursuing R&D activities on ICS under the CSIR-800 programme for the benefit of rural population.
