Clean Cooking Activities
DelAgua Health & Development Programs will distribute point of use water treatment and high efficiency cookstoves to approximately 3 million residents covering all 30 districts of Rwanda, targeting Ubudehe categories 1 and 2, the government recognized poorest 30% of the country. The project is in partnership with the Government of Rwanda Ministry of Health and the Rwanda Environmental Management Authority, and is being developed by Manna Energy Limited, a social enterprise that pioneered carbon financed water treatment in Rwanda.
DelAgua Health & Development Programs is partnering with several universities and the Ministry of Health to conduct controlled research studies on our programs. These independent studies are designed to examine the technology adoption, behavior change, and public health impacts of our programs. This research program is conducted in partnership with the Rwanda Ministry of Health, with oversight and approval from the Rwanda National Ethics Committee.
Partnership
DelAgua Health and Development Program would like to contribute its experience in health education, adoption/behavior change, monitoring and evaluation and research aspects from its innovative health program in Rwanda.
The water filters, cook-stoves, carbon credits and sensor instruments are all tools used to achieve a public health goal: reduced exposure to contaminated drinking water and indoor air pollution. The primary mechanism to achieve this is through direct and long-term partnership with the Rwanda Ministry of Health to educate end-users on the purpose and proper operation of the technologies, to gather feedback from the users and Community Health Workers on how to improve the program. This will be a multi-year iterative process, working with many different partners.
In parallel, DelAgua has contracted with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to conduct a controlled research trial in the project area, to study adoption rates and exposure reduction to contaminated drinking water and indoor air pollution.
As part of this study, DelAgua and the London School are also partnering with Portland State University and Berkeley Air Monitoring Group to implement remotely monitored air quality, cook-stove and water filter usage sensors in a sample of households.
