Clean Cooking Activities

Guided by academic advisors and business experts, the student leaders of Enactus create and implement community empowerment projects around the globe. The experience not only transforms lives, it helps students develop the kind of talent and perspective that are essential in an ever-more complicated and challenging world. In the FYE 2012, Enactus had 39 countries in its network, which equates to 1,600 university programs and 62,000 student participants. The university teams reported over 6,000 projects and 7,300,000 volunteer hours. Project examples include Kenya and Mexico. In Kenya, the Green Army Project targeted 700 students at Kagumo High School, Central Province, Kenya. In Kenya 68% of energy use is supplied by wood-based fuels. Using charcoal and firewood for cooking emits carbon monoxide and other particulates linked to health problems, while the amount of wood necessary to meet the cooking demands causes deforestation in many areas. The Enactus team at United States International University in Kenya designed a project that not only raises awareness of the need for environmental conservation, but also improves the health of over 700 high school students at Kagumo High School in central Kenya. By installing three biogas digesters the team provided the school with clean cooking energy, and reduced the amount of indoor air pollution caused by the previously used wood-burning cook stoves. The Enactus team plans to replicate their project in other institutions throughout the country. In Mexico, the Cooking With Sun project targeted 198 families from Tizapan el Alto, Jalisco, Mexico.
Many families in this area still cook with wood despite the financial, environmental and health toll, simply because they see few other options. The Enactus team from The University of Guadalajara, CU Valles developed a project to teach these families how they can eliminate indoor air pollution, avoid smoky cooking fires, and conserve the environment, all by harnessing the power of the sun. By using reflective domes to capture the sun's rays, families could effectively cook while reducing the negative effects from wood on the respiratory system and eyes, and dramatically cutting food preparation costs. Ultimately the team's project reduced firewood usage by sixty-two percent, while making it possible for nearly 200 families to run their homes more economically and live healthier lives.

Partnership

Enactus provides a program design and delivery model unprecedented by any other organization. While the Enactus program is not solely focused on clean cooking solutions, it has come to the forefront of the conversation for several teams. We will share information and best practice guidelines to teams already conducting projects regarding clean and efficient household cooking solutions. We will also share our progress in this sector, to assist the Alliance in reaching their goal of 100 million homes adopting clean and efficient stoves and fuels by 2020. If we are delivering solutions to people in need, then our teams should be delivering the best possible solution. It is with the Alliance that our teams will find this expertise and knowledge base that is critical to solving the greater global issue.
