Clean Cooking Activities

We are currently conducting a randomized intervention trial among maternal-infant
pairs in the Kintampo districts of rural Ghana where we distribute LPG cylinders plus fuel and improved biolite cookstove to pregnant women in two intervention clusters. Communities are randomly assigned one of two treatment arms, or to a control arm, with identification of pregnant women before the third trimester of pregnancy through community-based fieldworkers.
Within the early intervention villages, improved cook stoves are distributed to pregnant women after
enrollment, along with health insurance and an insecticide-treated bed net. The late
intervention group receives insurance and a bed net at enrollment, and the full intervention at
the completion of the postnatal follow-up in the matched intervention village. We will assess
real-time personal exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) and fine particle exposures among during pregnancy and during the neonatal period. Field workers monitors for severe pneumonia at weekly intervals in the home for the first 12 months of the child’s life based on the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness.

Partnership

Our organization will be in the position to carry out research projects relating to improved cook stoves as we have already started with high qualified staff. We will be able to collaborate and evaluate the impact of studies regarding the adoption of cleaner cook stoves to complement the vision of Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves.
