Clean Cooking Activities

The Ministry is involved in the promotion, construction, and use of energy saving stoves, such as ceramic lined and metal clad stoves which use wood fuel and charcoal. The stoves are famously known as “Kuni Mbili” in Kiswahili, meaning two pieces of wood to depict the use of very few pieces of wood to conserve both wood fuel and the environment
The Ministry of Agriculture is also involved in the promotion and use of fireless cookers which are energy and time saving devices. These stoves are made from locally available re-usable materials. To further save on energy, the Ministry is also promoting the use of alternative sources of fuel such as briquettes, which are made of mostly locally available waste materials like paper, charcoal dust, and wood shavings.
The Ministry in partnership with other stakeholders also promotes the use of solar cookers and dryers as well as the construction of biogas digesters and use of biogas.
In order to ensure a sustainable supply of wood fuel, our ministry works with farmers and youth to establish tree nurseries and woodlots in line with the 2009 farm forestry rules on 10% tree coverage. In addition to tree planting, the farmers are trained on sustainable harvesting of trees which involves the harvesting of branches/twigs against cutting the whole tree. Most of the trees promoted are those with multiple uses such as fodder and fruit trees.

Partnership

In this partnership the Ministry of Agriculture, which is a service Ministry, will participate in providing extension services and capacity building of women and women groups. The Ministry has a well-trained network of staff at all levels including the village level who work closely with women and other farmers.
The extension officers will train the women/farmers on the various clean energy technologies including those that save time and energy like the fireless cooker and help support the socking of dry foods like maize and beans to reduce cooking time.
The Ministry will also participate in this initiative by acting as a link between women and other stakeholders in clean cook stoves/ energy services, including cookstove installers and suppliers. The extension staff mentor individual women and groups to take up income generating activities like the production and sale of stove liners and fireless cookers, as well as liners and fireless cookers. These efforts will help improve the livelihoods of woman in Kenya.

The Ministry can also help support the evidence-base of risks associated with a lack of access to energy for cooking among displaced communities. The research would also address if and how cooking energy solutions reduce the risks of gender based violence (GBV) in humanitarian settings. In this regard, the Ministry can build the capacity of displaced persons to access clean cooking stoves that are complemented by food warmer baskets (fireless cookers). Briquettes, as a source of fuel energy, can also be promoted as a way of using recycled materials for natural environmental benefits.
The relationship between access to clean and efficient cooking stoves and fuels, as a mitigating strategy towards reducing GBV can be supported by activities aimed at improving livelihoods and health in humanitarian settlements. This includes building capacity to produce vegetables in micro-gardens and moist beds that are are made of recycled polythene bags. In addition to improving health, the vegetables produced can generate income for households to purchase fuel instead of spending time to collect it.
