Clean Cooking Activities

The RUWES initiative is targeted towards the under-served rural woman who is usually off grid, energy poor and has the highest incidence of health related issues from harmful energy practices. At the heart of the RUWES Initiative is access to opportunity for women, children and families. This can be attained through raising awareness about the connection between health, poverty and cooking fuel sources and the organization required for women themselves to demand for sustainable alternatives that provide a solution to that problem.

The goal of the RUWES project is to ensure a safe, affordable and sustainable clean energy access for all, especially the rural poor and also to reduce emission of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), by ensuring the following:

Enhance personal health and physical environment, and the reduction of premature death rates due to black carbon inhalation.

Create awareness and sensitization campaigns in the rural communities, on the need to reduce black carbon emission and adopt cleaner technologies through product demonstrations.

Create a viable market and sustainable supply chain for improved and clean energy technologies.

Create a source of income and serving as a means of poverty alleviation by providing energy for homes and small businesses.

Create access to finance for rural business incubation and entrepreneurship.

Provide 20 million clean cook-stoves across the six-geopolitical zones in the country by the year 2020

Partnership

RUWES would like to partner with the Global Alliance as an implementer. Our mandate is to see to the rapid adoption of cleaner and more energy efficient means of cooking within rural area of Nigeria that rely on fossil fuels and firewood for cooking and lighting which impacts negatively on the environment and the health of the Rural Dwellers.

We identify with the Alliance's mission of promoting the use of clean cook-stoves and creating awareness on the health, gender and economic benefits of using clean cook-stoves and fuels. We believe RUWES can assist the alliance in delivering on its stated objectives. One of RUWES key tasks is to promote the use of clean cook-stoves and work with relevant stakeholders in Nigeria to ensure that 20 million households in Nigeria use clean cook-stoves by the year 2020, as well as embarking on awareness creation campaigns across Nigeria providing information on the negative health impacts of fossils fuels and the benefits of using clean cook-stoves.

RUWES is putting in place the right mechanism and machinery to realize its goals by working with female based business memebership organizations, faith based organizations, non-profit organization to reach the rural woman [who has the highest incidence of health related cases due to use of fossil fuel] and provide her with cleaner and more energy efficient alternatives to fossil fuels.
