SSM is a 40 year old private business owned by the Shen family, and since 1995 has been directed by Mr. Shen (Chairman), and Mrs. Shen (General Manager). SSM is the largest manufacturer of domestic coal stoves in China. In 2008 it had an annual turnover of US $2.1M and 100 staff. By 2014 the annual gross revenue was 6.7 million with 160 people employed, 2/3 of whom are women. In 2014-15 700,000 highest quality stoves are being shipped to Rwanda. Mrs. Shen has assumed a major role at SSM in charge of human resources, budgeting, and production while Mr. Shen specializes in engineering, tooling, and design.
SSM’s value proposition is to deliver affordable, highly aspirational Rocket stoves and a new generation of cleaner burning stoves to existing distribution chains in profitable markets. Marketing the stoves through the highly successful Burn Manufacturing Company benefits both organizations. The stoves will also be added to hundreds of profitable products now on shelves in thousands of retail stores. SSM is well connected to the customer base and both distributors and retailers continually meet to update SSM on product improvement. The current products have been refined by over five years of sales.
