Clean Cooking Activities

Stoves for Life Enterprise (SFL) is involved in a myriad of activities around efficient cookstoves (known locally as Upesi) and wood fuel. Upesi efficient cookstoves existed in Western Kenya long before SFL began in 2010; however, they were expensive, and community members could not afford to purchase, transport, and install these stoves in their households. Stoves for Life Enterprise therefore came in to fill the gap between the producers and the huge demand in these communities through purchasing, transporting, and installing cookstoves in the community through a subsidized program and in collaboration with contracted women's groups. Baseline research conducted by SFL found that with the use of efficient cookstoves there was significantly less woodfuel used as compared to the traditional cooking methods. This reduction alone was enough reason to base the project on. In due time, more research concluded that the distribution of cookstoves would help reduce wood demand from forests, as well as reduce the amount of indoor air pollution in households and the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. Community members and organizations have appreciated the project efforts since it is a significant employer in the western Kenya region. The project's progression only means more benefits to the community.

Partnership

Stoves for Life Enterprise will contribute immeasurably to the Alliance’s goal of enabling 100 million households around the world to adopt clean cookstoves by the year 2020. With more than 60,000 efficient cook stoves already installed in Kenya, we hope to share the vast field, technical, and logistical experience that was gained with installing more than 60,000 stoves both in the field and in our databases. Stoves for Life Enterprise intends to continue the growth, expertise, and efficiency of the clean cooking sector and would be interested in learning more about efficient and cleaner cookstoves options around the world. In addition, through attending of seminars, workshops, and conferences convened by the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, Stoves for Life intends to engage in consultations, build constructive partnerships with other organizations, share smart ideas, and access possible funding opportunities.
