Sustainable Alternatives for Rural Accord (SARA) Centre

Mission

SARA Centre is a community-driven, artist-run initiative located in Dombekoppa Village of the Shimoga District in Karnataka, India. Established as a platform for dialogue, SARA Centre invites artists, intellectuals, environmentalists, farmers, teachers and students to share and to raise public awareness about sustainable living practices that specifically address the ecological concerns of the region. Clean Cooking Activities

Since the main objective of SARA Centre is addressing the environmental concerns of the region. According to our own survey, up to 94% of the population of the region depended on the firewood for their energy needs (excluding lighting purposes). This region is well within the heart of the Western Ghats, which is already in deep ecological crisis. Since the region's majority activities are agriculture and farmers, labourers, small traders are all spread over the region, the receding forest is no position to cater to the energy needs of the population. Our research shows that this activity has greatly contributed to the agrarian and ecological crisis of the region. We need to bring down the firewood demand 20% by way of effective usage of advanced stoves, technology and other alternative energy systems into usage at the earliest.

Partnership

SARA Centre is situated within the rural community range and has the basic infrastructure to invite hundreds of school children and elders to the centre. The Centre can organise workshops to design, adopt new technology and demonstrate to the visitors. The Centre also has a huge network within the community to spread the technology efficiently in a timebound manner to see the tangible result on the ground. SARA has realised the need for such initiative around the region since there is a huge gap in supply for such alternative resources. SARA is hoping to find a great partnership in your organisation in implementing our common goals.
