Clean Cooking Activities
Improved cook stoves have not reached most households in most of Siaya County. In our pilot project we targeted two sub-counties and the response was quite receptive. We designed and distributed locally manufactured cook stoves that were efficient in energy consumption – use of little firewood and hardly produces any smoke. The purpose of this project is to escalate this initiative so that more people are reached with this intervention. This project will also be integrated with agroforestry to supply wood fuel and curb deforestation. The project also intends to train local cook stove artisans. According to the World Agroforestry Center, utilization of energy efficient stoves and reforestation are closely linked tools that are vital in restoring both environmental and human health especially in Western Kenya.
Various approaches will be employed for the various components of the project. Sustainet will work with existing group structures in establishment of tree nurseries and our field officers will organize the farmers into manageable groups to enhance information sharing. We will then schedule farmer exchange visits, field days and facilitate upscaling initiatives. Sustainet will also utilize existing group structures to distribute the energy efficient stoves while disseminating technologies associated with the same.
Partnership
An initial meeting will be organized by the County Government officials at the Agricultural department to initiate this project. The County Government will give a go ahead and the officials that we will be working with in order to identify and mobilize the target population. Criteria will be developed by our organization and the County officials (Ward Agricultural officers under the stewardship of the Sub County Officer) of eligible beneficiaries and a beneficiaries’ database will be documented. Community meetings will be arranged for all the groups and a community Action Plan reached at before we start implementation. Another meeting will be organized at the County level to bring on board the County officials to discuss the Community Action Plans and then capacity building for the lead beneficiaries will start. These training will be cascaded to the rest of the farmers through the lead beneficiaries under the supervision of the Ward Agricultural Officers and being coordinated by our Field facilitators. Later on farmers’ exchange visits and field days will be organized to enhance learning and replication of activities. Distribution will then be organized to target the farmer groups.
In terms of administration, the organization will recruit more field staff to cover the larger area. 2 more motor-bikes will be bought. The organization will provide its double cabin that the Regional Project Coordinator would be using to monitor and backstop the project periodically.
