Energy Specialist – Solar for Health Project (UNDP Zambia)

Summary

UNDP Zambia is hiring an Energy Specialist to lead the implementation of the Solar for Health Project, enhancing access to clean, reliable energy in healthcare facilities, especially in remote areas. The role focuses on strategic guidance, technical implementation, sustainable financing, and policy support in alignment with Zambia’s renewable energy goals and SDG 7.

Key Responsibilities

• Technical Advisory:

•Oversee solar PV installations in selected health facilities

•Conduct site assessments and ensure policy-aligned system design

•Develop sustainability and maintenance plans

• Financing & Investment:

•Identify innovative financing mechanisms (e.g., blended finance, carbon credits)

•Engage with private sector and development finance partners

•Prepare feasibility studies for PPPs

• Policy & Capacity Building:

•Support integration of renewable energy into Zambia’s health infrastructure

•Train MoH staff and local technicians on solar system operations

•Strengthen institutional capacity for system management

• Monitoring & Knowledge Management:

•Develop monitoring frameworks and impact metrics

•Document best practices and lessons learned

•Produce progress and donor reports

Qualifications

•Master’s degree in energy, environment, engineering, or related field (Bachelor’s with 2 additional years’ experience also considered)

•5+ years’ experience (or 7+ with bachelor’s) in energy project development in Africa

•Proven expertise in renewable energy project design, finance, and stakeholder engagement

•Excellent communication and cross-functional project management skills

•Fluency in English required
