Spark Fund Round 1 Grantee GVEP Launches New Stove Models in Kenya

How do you take a widely accepted stove in a local market and improve its efficiency? GVEP, a global NGO, sought to address that challenge as they began to implement their work under the first round of the Alliance’s Spark Fund. GVEP has been working with local Kenyan cookstove manufacturers for over a decade and noticed the market potential for a new take on the Kenyan Ceramic Jiko to improve performance and diversify the product offering of competitive Kenyan stove manufacturers.

Early in the project, GVEP identified ten local enterprises to participate in the design of a new wood and charcoal Jiko and introduce the new stove designs in the market. GVEP selected and trained the companies based on their potential to produce quality products and distribute the new technologies at scale. In collaboration with Kenya Stove Works, GVEP has finalized the design, initial testing and entrepreneur training phases of their project. Today, you can find the models available in the Central Kenya and Kisumu and the retail for about 2,500 Kenyan Schillings. Learn more about the launch of these products and GVEP’s work through the Spark Fund:
