Access to Energy: Call for Case Studies
World Access to Energy (WAME)
Currently, nearly 1.3 billion people, almost 20% of the world population, have no access to electricity and around 2.4 billion people, 38% of the world population, are without clean cooking facilities. In accordance to the International Energy Agency, WAME defines lack of access to electricity and to clean cooking facilities as lack of access to “modern energy”. Over 95% of the people without access to modern energy are concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa or developing Asia and 84% of them live in rural areas. The world distribution of this energy poverty largely coincides with the world distribution of overall extreme poverty.
The objective of these case studies is to enable us to learn from the experience of other people’s energy access initiatives and provide a source of references for energy practitioners. The case studies identify both barriers to energy access and innovative ways of crossing those barriers. They show that it is possible to create and implement successful interventions that make the objective of universal access to energy nearer. This is the motivation for the Call.
Invitation to submit your Case Study on a project or group of projects by the 16th of January 2015.
Projects must be referred to one of the two WAME categories: a) “Energy access” and b) “Energy access and nutrition”. Projects participating in this contest must be targeted at extending access to modern energy, either electricity or clean cooking facilities; the application must indicate who is responsible for their management and budget.
Selected case studies will be showcased at the EXPO2015 in Milan, which will also announce a special prize for gender empowerment.

OUTSIDE THE CALL
You may also signal any interesting feature of the world effort towards universal access to energy, beyond specific projects: government policies and programs, business models, scientific and technical innovations. We shall appreciate and possibly upload any description contributing to better knowledge on this world challenge.
