New Studies Reveal Detailed Data on Cooking Behaviors of Indian Consumers in Kerala and Rajasthan
The majority of Indians in Kerala and Rajasthan spend close to three hours each day cooking, and respondents in Kerala were more than twice as likely to have access to LPG stoves and/or cylinders as those in Rajasthan, according to two reports on the cookstove landscape in those two states.
The studies, part of the Global Alliance’s efforts around building demand for clean and efficient cookstove and fuel options, gathered a detailed baseline of current stove and fuel usage among solid fuel users. Household surveys of approximately 6,000 respondents in Rajasthan and 4,000 in Kerala identified key factors that drive current usage patterns and the barriers that currently impede transition to cleaner stoves and fuels. Findings from qualitative research, including focus group discussions and ethnographic immersions, complemented the quantitative survey results.
The studies were conducted by Nielsen India in collaboration with the Governments of Kerala and Rajasthan as part it’s the Alliance’s work to build a foundation of market research to better understand the demand landscape for cookstoves and fuels in Alliance focus countries. Study findings were presented to the respective governments and key stakeholders. Both states are supportive of working with the Alliance to design programs that address the barriers identified in the reports.
