Mission

The Corbett Foundation was established by Mr. Dilip D. Khatau as a non-profit, non-government organisation and a charitable trust in 1994.® The Corbett Foundation (TCF) is entirely dedicated to the cause of wildlife conservation, environmental awareness, community outreach programmes, tribal welfare, alternate livelihood and sustainable development initiatives.® From a small beginning in Corbett, TCF has over the years grown into one of the foremost NGOs in India in the field of wildlife conservation and also working in Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Kaziranga tiger reserves and around the Greater Rann of Kutch.® TCF is a Member of IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) and Gobal Tiger Forum.

Clean Cooking Activities

Solar Lanterns Programme:

TCF's programmes are focused towards mitigating anthropogenic pressures on forest and wildlife. As a first step towards achieving this larger goal, TCF, in collaboration with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), established a solar-powered charging station and donated 90 solar lanterns to households in Rakhi village, situated at the outskirts of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve and that has no electricity supply. The main objective of TCF is to minimize the practice of firewood collection from the forest and to curtail the burning of fossil fuels by the villagers for lighting purposes.®

TCF's baseline survey has revealed that each family burns an average of 8-10 kg of firewood every day to meet with their daily needs. With around 100 households in the village, an average of 300 quintal of firewood is burnt every year for lighting homes. The project is self sustainable and is managed on the principles of micro-finance. Each household pays Rupee One (INR 1) per day for using the lantern. The amount thus collected is maintained in a separate bank account and all expenses related to the lantern repairs and maintenance is paid through this account. The villagers of Rakhi have welcomed the project and are quite satisfied with the performance of the solar-powered lanterns. TCF extended this project to other non-electrified villages around the tiger reserve like Kucchuwa, Koluhawah and Gadhpuri.

On the occasion of World Earth Day 2011, The Corbett Foundation launched its Solar Lanterns Project for Chichirangpur village situated in the buffer zone of Kanha Tiger Reserve. The project was launched at the gracious hands of Shri. Sartaj Singh, Hon'ble Forest Minister of Madhya Pradesh. This was the first such initiative in Kanha region! Chichirangpur village is primarily of Baiga tribes and has no electricity provision. The Solar-powered Lanterns will curtail the use of firewood and kerosene by the households substantially. During Wildlife Week 2011, TCF extended this project to Baigatola, Aramtola, Laltikra and Jagrahtola villages. The entire project is sponsored by Shri. Laxmikumar Goculdas in the memory of late Shri. R. M. Goculdas, ex-Trustee and a great supporter of The Corbett Foundation since its inception. TCF plans to include more villages under this project in Kanha-Pench corridor.

Partnership

The Corbett Foundation has a strong presence in around 100-odd villages in and around the tiger reserves of Kanha and Bandhavgarh ® in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. Most of these villages are located in the forests and the villagers are entirely dependent on firewood burning for cooking purpose. We wish to introduce energy-efficient chulahs, biogas, etc. to these villagers so that their dependency on firewood is reduced substantially, thus resulting reduced pressures on the forests and less cases of human-wildlife conflict.

We would like to collaborate with potential sponsors who can help us in reaching out to these villages and helping them in adopting environment-friendly lifestyle.
