Clean Cooking Activities

St. Paul University Philippines (SPUP), through its Community Development Center, is involved in clean cooking solutions, i.e., producing non-wood charcoal and using non-wood cooking fuel (rice hulls, peanut and coconut shells, and other biomass waste) - in one of the most heavily-deforested regions in the Philippines.
We are currently working on establishing a "green charcoal" program through a grant from the Japanese Embassy. This project is a replication of the Kalibo Save the Mangroves (KASAMA) initiative in Aklan.
At the same time, we are looking for funding to continue our clean cookstove project through the use of the Mayon Turbo Stove that is fuelled by rice hulls and other biomass waste, an initiative that we are working on with our partners in Aklan, Sustainable Rural Enterprise (SRE), a member of the GACC.

Partnership

SPUP is the lead university of the At. Paul University system, one of the largest Catholic schools in the country. The tree-lined campus is known as "the university set in a forest,” which makes its tree-saving activities a natural endeavor, especially as SPUP is located in one of the most heavily-deforested regions in the Philippines. Pope Francis' encyclical on the environment reinforces all of this.

The clean-cooking project also focuses on the urgency of protecting women's livelihood resources (charcoal-making and marketing are primary sources of income for rural women), especially now that the Philippine government has started to enforce its ban on the use of wood-sourced cooking fuel. The program will be promoted in various regions of the country, particularly those where other St. Paul University schools are located. Students and faculty members will be engaged as the "foot soldiers." SPUP’s schools of medicine and nursing will be engaged in conducting field studies on the health hazards of traditional cooking fuels and mechanisms, and the school of business will assist in determining and promoting market potential.
