Clean Cooking Activities

ECONET works with tribal communities in tribal areas designated as Scheduled Areas. Because of these remote nature of these areas, it has been more difficult to promote clean cooking adoption. ECONET through its bio energy programme has been working with tribal communities in different parts of Maharashtra to replace kerosene and firewood with smokeless chullahs (cooking stoves). And with our successes in Nasik and Nanded districts, we are keen to reach out to more tribal villages and hamlets where firewood is the only answer for cooking and heating, practices that affect forests as well as the health of women.

Partnership

ECONET is interested in being a partner to the Alliance in promoting clean cookstoves among and working with communities across the Western region of India on using these solutions. ECONET's key constituency comprises of tribal populations in the Scheduled Areas, who are highly dependent on forests to obtain firewood for cooking and heating. LPG and electrification are not the only solutions to address energy deficits in rural and remote areas. There is a direct link between clean cooking stoves and gender - i.e. women's health, time spent on firewood collection, and threats to safety and security. Clean cooking can help women empower themselves and their societies.

As part of this partnership, ECONET would like to offer the following: 1) awareness building among the community on use of clean cooking stoves; 2) implementing community projects in select tribal areas (remote and with no access to LPG) to showcase the potential of clean cooking in changing standard of living; 3) undertaking studies and documentation on energy deficits in rural areas and in predominantly by tribal, nomadic, and dalit communities; 4) showcasing how the health of women and overall status of women, including their participation in the governance and public arenas can help change clean cooking; and 5) engaging on policy and advocacy through collaborative processes.
