Clean Cooking Activities
Major potential in renewable energy sources in Kenya lies in biomass, biogas, biodiesel, solar, wind and mini/micro hydropower. Currently the country suffers a biomass (wood, charcoal) deficit which is estimated to be up to 60% of the demand. This imbalance causes considerable pressure on the remaining forest and vegetation stocks, thereby accelerating the processes of land degradation. In addition, biomass production for energy also competes with other forms of land use such as agriculture.
Currently, the main source of primary energy in ASALs of Kenya is wood fuel, which accounts for about 70% of all energy consumption. The balance is supplied by petroleum (21%) and electricity (9%). A significant share of the electricity (over 60%) is produced from hydro power. The development of renewable energy production and utilization is currently remote from the national grid; hence contribution of renewable sources of energy to the overall energy supply mix requires much more combined effort to fully optimize the benefits from renewable energy potential. Poor grid infrastructure has resulted in a thriving private market for solar photovoltaic systems and a growing number of industries are exploring available opportunities for on-site generation.
Partnership
Bioenergy Research and Development Foundation (BIFORAD) will collaborate with clean cooking alliance to accelerate production of renewable, affordable and clean energy from biogas in an effort to reduce over dependence on wood fuel for cooking and home lighting by local communities. BIFORAD will endeavor to promote innovative research and development program approaches and facilitate the establishment of rural-based cottage industries for processing and marketing of quality products for the benefits of vulnerable groups, particularly women and children and offer a cleaner alternative by minimizing the pollutant effects from use of kerosene for cooking and lighting in households.
