Clean Cooking: Future Hope and the Household Reality in Africa
The African Energy Commission (AFREC), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) are convening a series of Technical and Policy Dialogues on Clean Cooking for Climate and Clean Air in Africa.
This first policy dialogue explores how electric cooking can be scaled across Africa to deliver cleaner, more affordable, and more reliable cooking solutions at speed and at scale. Drawing on insights from recent analysis published by the IEA, World Bank, African Commission and the UN, invited speakers will explore how eCooking (ideally powered by renewable electricity) is an important part of this diverse portfolio, with electricity demand for cooking in sub-Saharan Africa projected to grow by about 65 TWh by 2040 under accelerated scenarios, supported by improved grid reliability and distribution expansion. Bringing together technical experts and country representatives, the session will examine the elements needed to accelerate adoption of electric cooking, share practical insights from real-world case studies, and discuss how coordinated action across sectors can unlock major health, climate, and economic benefits for households and communities across Africa.
