The traditional way of cooking food on an open fire inside the home is harmful to human health and to the environment. Yet it is common habit for 2.6 billion people (38 percent of humanity). Over four million people die prematurely each year, due to the pollution created by cooking fires. Moreover, the basic fuel used, wood and other biomass, is scarce, and the burden of walking miles to collect and carry it falls on women and girls. This means sacrificing other activities (including education) and destroying vegetation. Yet, safe and affordable clean cooking solutions exist that can dramatically reduce fuel consumption and exposure to harmful cookstove smoke, while providing economic opportunities in communities around the world.
