Background:
Today, 2.8 billion people globally still cook with traditional polluting fuels and technologies and 4 billion people lack access to clean, efficient, convenient, safe, reliable, and affordable cooking energy, costing the world more than $2.4 trillion each year, driven by adverse impacts on health, climate, and women. To accelerate access to clean cooking, innovative ways for scaling up investment are needed. Building on the climate finance experience, the World Bank and its partners are developing approaches in which impact-driven funds could be deployed to pay for verified climate, health, and gender impacts from clean cooking interventions.
As part of the Workshop Sessions for Innovate4Climate 2021, this workshop co-hosted by ESMAP will bring together perspectives from the public and private sector to discuss the vision and recent progress toward developing an impact bonds market to finance climate, health, and gender co-benefits from clean cooking and how we can turn the COVID setback into opportunities to accelerate the transition to clean cooking.
