LPG4SDG7 Launch
Four billion people, or approximately half of the world’s population, do not have access to clean cooking, according to the World Bank (September 2020). Most of them use charcoal, wood and kerosene to cook, with appalling health and environmental consequences. Using LPG for cooking is the only solution in the medium term that can address this energy poverty in an economically viable way at scale and take us within reach of meeting UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 on energy access.
LPG4SDG7 is a group of companies and development-focused organisations that have come together
for cleaner cooking – to align and scale up our activities to meet this humanitarian and development challenge.
The launch will be moderated by Hon. Kandeh Yumkella, former UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All, and a global champion for SDG7 and clean cooking. Speakers include:
- Andrew Kamau, Principal Secretary, State Department of Petroleum, Ministry of Petroleum and Mining, Kenya
- Idesbald Chinamula, Director General of ANSER, the Democratic Republic of Congo National Agency for Rural Energ Services
- Anibor Kragha, Executive Secretary, African Refiners and Distributors Association
- Kimball Chen, Chairman, Global LPG Partnership
The following companies and organisations will briefly announce why they support the LPG4SDG7 coalition and how their activities are addressing the fact that half of the world’s population does not have access to clean cooking:
Bboxx, Clean Cooking Alliance, Enabling Qapital, Envirofit, GLPGP, Paygo, Shell Foundation, Siemens, SPARK+Africa, Standard Chartered, WLPGA and Trafigura.
The LPG4SDG7 mission statement will be made public during the launch.
The companies and organisations behind LPG4SDG7 believe that through innovative blended finance solutions and improved sharing of information, the provision of clean cooking solutions can be significantly scaled up.
