Off-Grid Solar Access Project Consultation Meeting

The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum is inviting interested private sector stakeholders and industry players to a one-hour consultation meeting on Thursday, November 17th, 2016 at 9:30am at the KPLC Auditorium, Stima Plaza, Kolobot Road, Nairobi. The objectives of the meeting are to relay general information on the Off Grid Solar Access Project to private sector stakeholders, present details of the approach to the cookstove sub-component, including expected procurement packages and implementation arrangements, and to receive feedback from vendors on the suitability and sustainability of the proposed project design. The consultation is also to help to hear from the industry players as a process of market sounding and use the market information for project procurement strategy preparation.

The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum is preparing the Kenya Off-grid Solar Access Project to be financially supported by the World Bank. One of the project objectives, among others, is to support the transformation of the market for improved, clean cookstoves in selected underserved counties of rural Kenya. It is estimated that more than 20,000 households and community facilities –such as schools and hospitals- can potentially benefit from this component of the project.

The project procurement is to follow the World Bank’s Procurement Regulations for Investment Projects Financing (IPF) Borrowers. The project is currently under preparation, but it is planned that an initial Expression of Interest (EoI) will be posted in January 2017 to solicit bids for improved, clean stoves (charcoal, wood, and clean fuels such as ethanol and LPG) to be included in a market test phase for the first of two counties being targeted under the project.
