The Alliance is organizing five sessions about the clean cooking sector during the SE4ALL conference.
Alliance and ENERGIA Session: Developing and Investing in Gender-Informed Business Models for Scaling up Energy Access
Date: May 18, 2015, 2:50pm – 4:05pm
Emerging evidence shows that women are increasingly playing a central role in expanding energy access, especially for the poor and underserved. The role goes beyond women as users of energy services to women as change agents in energy access: in selling, maintaining, and financing energy products and services. This session will demonstrate how gender can be mainstreamed into energy business models to increase effectiveness and impact, as well as the merits of these models as investment opportunities.

Scaling Up Clean Cooking Solutions: Launch of a Global Report by World Bank
May 19, 2015, 9:20am – 10:35am
Providing clean cooking access to over 2.8 billion people in the developing world is an essential part of SE4ALL goal of universal energy access by 2030. However, given the multifaceted nature of the clean cooking sector – encompassing the health, environmental, technological and natural resource dimensions – rapid scale up remains a major challenge. The new joint publication by the Alliance and ESMAP/WB – The State of the Global Clean and Improved Cooking Sector — will be formally launched at the session, which will capture the magnitude of this challenge and discussed the progress as well as opportunities in achieving the SE4ALL goal. The launch will be followed by a panel discussion involving some of the key players in the sector elaborating on the methods and approaches to scale up clean cooking solutions. Opening remarks: Anita Marangoly George, Senior Director, Energy and Extractives Global Practice, World Bank; and Radha Muthiah, Chief Executive Officer, Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves
Separate registration is not necessary.
Alliance Session: Financing Energy Access in Conflict Settings
Date: May 19, 2015, 11:10am – 12:25pm
This session will highlight innovative public-private partnerships and programs that have been developed to address and finance cleaner energy access in humanitarian settings. The focus will be on innovative financing mechanisms that have been successfully implemented, and the role of displaced people, host country governments, and implementing agencies in making these work. The session will allow for a practical discussion on the challenges of scaling up sustainable energy for displaced people and discuss how to enable and finance solutions.
Driving Energy Access in the Developing World Through Innovative Financing for Clean Cooking Solutions
Date: May 19, 2015, 2:40pm – 3:55pm
Creating a thriving global market for clean cookstoves and fuels will require significant capital investments at each stage of the cookstove and fuel supply value chain – research and development, manufacturing, marketing, consumer financing, and distribution – from a range of financial sector players. The types of support needed range from early stage grant funding for start-up costs, to subsidized capital, angel equity investment, and ultimately commercial capital.
This session will feature a diverse panel of experts working to drive investment into the sector and prepare the market for scale, supporting the development of commercially viable and scalable enterprise, and raising awareness in the investor community on the opportunities within the sector.
Separate registration is not necessary.
Alliance Session: Maximizing the Benefits of Clean Cooking Fuels–Creating a Sustainable Mass Market
Date: May 19, 2015, 4:35 pm – 5:50 pm
Clean burning cooking fuels is a critical global need. Reducing the unsustainable use of biomass for cooking will drive improvements in the health of women and children and reduce the environmental damage driven by the use of traditional biomass and charcoal. There are a variety of fuel options currently in use and available for consumers in each country, each with their own benefits and tradeoffs. Among those options are clean burning fuels such as ethanol, biogas, LPG and solar. However, in some cases, their market potential and impacts are not clearly communicated. The objective of this session is to highlight key initiatives in interventions, research and innovations that have and will result in measurable impacts for energy, environment and health and increased access for these clean fuel sources.
