Webinar: Evaluating Fuel Pathways to Prioritize and Scale Cleaner Options – A Life Cycle Analysis of Cooking Fuels
*Please feel free to this share this invitation among your colleagues*
Please join the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves on Wednesday, March 1st at 8:00 AM Eastern Standard Time (EST) for a webinar designed for Alliance new and existing partners. This webinar is part of a series that provides an overview of how the Alliance works, the benefits of partnership, highlights, upcoming opportunities for partners, and features on specific tools, resources, and engagement activities. In addition, this webinar will highlight the results of a new report and online tool that captures the production, processing, distribution, and usage impacts of cooking fuels. The Alliance in partnership with Eastern Research Group (ERG) developed the Comparative Analysis of Fuels for Cooking: Life Cycle Environmental Impacts and Economic and Social Considerations report and complementary tool. The report provides a snapshot of impacts resulting from the production of 11 different cooking fuels, including liquid and gas, as well as a range of biomass such as wood, agricultural residue, and bamboo. To complement the report, the Alliance and ERG developed the Fuel Analysis, Comparison & Integration Tool, or FACIT. FACIT enables stakeholders and Alliance partners to manually change parameters – such as fuel type, country, and indicators – to compare the trade-offs of various cooking fuels and isolate the steps in the fuel production that have the largest impacts.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted a life cycle assessment to compare the environmental footprint of current and potential fuels used for cooking in China and India. In addition to an assessment of electric stoves that utilize a diverse set of fuel types upstream, the EPA’s life cycle assessment data were integrated within the Alliance’s study. Current fuel mix profiles are compared to scenarios of projected differences in cleaner cooking fuels. Building upon the initial research, the EPA expanded their study to include Kenya and Ghana and developed new stove use emission life cycle inventories. The EPA built on this data to conduct an uncertainty analysis for each fuel and stove type combination. The expanded study also performed an extensive series of sensitivity analyses which tested the effect of stove thermal efficiency, stove technology use, electrical grid mix, forest renewability factors, and allocation approaches on environmental impacts of cookstove use. A normalized presentation of results was developed for each country, which helps to identify the categories of environmental impact that are most strongly linked to the cooking sector. Data from the expanded study are expected to be available in late 2017.
In addition to FACIT, users and partners can use the EPA study tool to access data and analyses that evaluate differences in fuels and other parameters, such as stove technology and sensitivity parameters. The EPA tool can also analyze potential effects on environmental impacts to help inform cookstove fuel policy development.
Date/Time
Wednesday, March 1st, 8:00 AM US EST
Agenda:
The first 5 minutes of the webinar will familiarize partners with the work of the Alliance. Current partners are encouraged to listen in to learn about new programs, resources, and events that may be of interest
The next 40 minutes will discuss the goals of FACIT, as well as the methodology, key results, and research gaps that the report and tool revealed. Webinar participants will also learn about navigating the information in the reports and tools to strengthen decision making around cooking fuels.
The remaining 15 minutes will be reserved for Q&A.
