WEBINAR: Sustainable Fuels and Spark
In 2013, the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves launched the 2nd round of the Spark Fund – a grant facility designed to mirror early stage investment. The goal of this facility is to help enterprises reach commercial viability and scale by funding business capacity development and growth and invest in enterprises with scalable approaches that have the potential to transform the sector through their success. Four of six grantees selected for Round 2 are scaling up the manufacturing and distribution of clean cooking fuels such as green charcoal, biogas, and bioethanol. To supplement the support to these fuel-focused Spark grantees, the Alliance partnered the grantees with fuel experts from ENEA Consulting. The support they provided to the grantees ranged from risk analysis studies, life cycle analyses, training and capacity building in the field, methodological support, technical assistance, critical review of scale-up strategy and recommendations for how the Spark grantees can plan for scaling up production while ensuring a sustainable supply of resources.
Presenters:
• Eco Fuel Africa – Production of green charcoal in Uganda
• SGFE – Production of green charcoal in Cambodia
• Simgas – Production of biogas systems in Kenya and Tanzania
• ENEA – Fuel sustainability consultants
Each grantee will describe their issues and needs for support, how the Spark Fund allowed them to overcome barriers for their growth, with both financial and technical support. ENEA will share its main conclusions and lessons learned from these support activities, with general recommendations particularly applicable to green charcoal briquettes and biogas fuels.
