How To Participate in the Standards Process
Standards will impact all types of organizations in the clean cooking sector. Participating in standards development allows organizations and countries to share their experiences and priorities, making standards more valuable and relevant.
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 285 is the key body that is developing and approving standards. This committee is comprised of experts from around the world from 44 countries and 8 international organizations. This page has information for how to get involved, as well as how to participate as experts in TC 285.
To join the ISO standards development work:
For Alliance Partners working in a limited number of countries:
Participating countries form “mirror committees”, open to all affected and interested parties. This committee develops national standards, nominates experts for Working Groups, and develops positions on TC 285 activities. Contact your national standards organization to join.
For Non-Profit International Organizations:
Some international organizations may join as a liaison organization. Liaisons can send representatives to the international standards meetings, recommend experts to working groups, and submit comments on draft standards, but do not vote to approve standards. For more information on how to join as a liaison, please contact Mr. Zacharia Lukorito Chepkania secretary of TC 285.
For Countries and National Standards Organizations:
Any full member of ISO may join TC 285 at any time, and Correspondent and Subscriber members may join TC 285 as one of the five committees they may participate in. Interested Countries and National Bodies should communicate their intent to participate to tcsupport@iso.org.
Information for TC 285 Experts
Committee Structure:
TC 285 provides international and multi-stakeholder oversight of the committee priorities and activities. Mirror committees in participating countries provide national input on committee activities, while Working and Task Groups resolve open questions and develop drafts. External liaison organizations share expertise and coordinate on parallel activities. A Chairperson’s Advisory Group has been formed to coordinate activities among the WGs and TGs.
4 Working Groups and 2 Task Groups were formed after the plenary meeting in Nairobi, Kenya in February 2014 to develop draft standards (WGs) and perform tasks related to committee planning (TGs).
