Alliance Statement on India’s Plan to Provide Universal Access to Cooking Gas
“I commend the plans from India’s finance minister and the Indian government to provide universal access to cooking gas across India. Switching millions of people from cooking with solid fuels to consistent use of liquefied petroleum gas could deliver dramatic impacts on health and the environment. Household air pollution from cooking is responsible for nearly one million deaths in India each year, thousands of which could be prevented through use of cleaner fuels such as LPG.
“Beyond the tremendous health impacts, household energy consumption is responsible for as much as 30 percent of India’s outdoor air pollution. By delivering universal access to cleaner cooking fuels, India can take a significant step toward addressing its air quality issues and improving health while also serving as an example for other countries working to ensure cooking no longer kills. The Global Alliance looks forward to supporting the government and in country stakeholders to achieve this vision.”
