Radha Muthiah

Dear Friends,

As most of you know, this is my first week at the Alliance. I’m so excited to be on board and to begin working together with you to address one of the most pressing issues facing the world today. 

Throughout my career, I’ve aspired to address global development, energy, and climate issues in both the public and private sectors. I know firsthand the importance of delivering impact that is both inclusive and sustainable. For household energy and clean cooking, this depends on a well-resourced market fueled by resilient enterprises, strong consumer demand, and government policies that support our sector. There is no single solution for this complex issue — it’s going to take a whole systems approach…

The Bangladesh government plans to expand its work to develop a sustainable market cleaner, more efficient cookstoves in Bangladesh. The new program is expected to benefit up to 5 million rural households by 2021.

2018 State of Global Air: Over 7 billion people face unsafe air

Air pollution is the leading environmental cause of death worldwide according to a report from the Health Effects Insitute. The report found that one in three global citizens was exposed to housold air pollution from the use of solid fuels in 2016.

Household air polution linked to higher risk of cardiovascular disease

Exposure to household air pollution from using wood or coal for cooking and heating is associated with higher risk of death from heart attack and stroke, according to new research published in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves is a United Nations Foundation-hosted public-private partnership to save lives, improve livelihoods, empower women, and protect the environment by creating a thriving global market for clean and efficient household cooking solutions. The Alliance’s goal calls for 100 million households to adopt clean and efficient stoves and fuels by 2020. The Alliance is working with over 1800 public, private, and non-profit partners to accelerate the production, deployment, and use of clean cookstoves and fuels in the developing world.
