This inaugural report analyzes data on investment flows, business model growth, and financial performance to highlight emerging trends across the global clean cooking sector.

Save the Date! Clean Cooking Forum 2019 in Kenya, November 5-7

For the first time, the biennial Clean Cooking Forum will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, with hundreds of attendees from dozens of countries expected to attend from November 5-7. As the flagship event for the sector, the Forum will include investors, government officials, businesses, advocates, and academics from around the world working to increase access to clean cooking solutions.

Chef Sanjeev Kapoor Discusses Importance of Clean Cooking with Industry Leaders, Showcases Innovative Technologies

Kicking off a six-month behavior change campaign in India, the Alliance and Chef Corps member Sanjeev Kapoor held a discussion and cooking demonstration in Mumbai to highlight the importance of clean cooking. Alliance CEO Dymphna van der Lans and Chef Kapoor were joined by industry leaders to discuss sector progress and highlight innovative cooking technologies.

On Earth Day, Remembering Why Lessons Learned Are Critical to the Future of Clean Cooking

Following the implementation of behavior change communications campaigns in South Asia and Africa, the Alliance hosted workshops in Nepal and Kenya to share successes and lessons learned. These findings will be compiled by the Alliance and shared in an upcoming report.

As part of a time-use study by the Alliance and Berkeley Air Monitoring Group, women in rural Kenya shared photos and stories about how cleaner, more modern stoves can provide a range of benefits, from freeing up time for income-generating activities to helping change gender norms.

Why “Ordinary” is the Goal for Clean Cooking Standards

Dedicated to promoting productive growth throughout the clean cooking sector, the International Organization for Standardization, with support from the Alliance, is continuing to develop unified protocols for cookstove production and testing to help promote the efficiency of technology, business, and finance.

2019 SAFE Conference and First-ever Humanitarian Energy Workshop to Take Place in Ethiopia in July

In July 2019, Safe Access to Fuel & Energy (SAFE), the Alliance, and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research will host the SAFE Workshop and the first-ever Humanitarian Energy Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The events will bring together a wide range of stakeholders working to improve energy access for crisis-affected people around the world.

PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency published a new report exploring the roles and consequences of various technologies and fuels in a transition toward universal access to clean cooking in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The UK Department for International Development, Loughborough University, and World Bank Energy Launch Modern Energy Cooking Services Program

This new research project aims to find innovative, clean, and modern alternatives to biomass fuels, including ways for people to use electricity to cook at home.

BioLite, a leading organization in off-grid energy solutions, is partnering with EcoZoom, a leading manufacturer in the clean cooking market.

Ashden Announces its 2019 Longlist for First-ever Clean Cooking Award

Five organizations ranging from fuel manufacturers to companies offering technical assistance have been named as longlist finalists for the first-ever Ashden Clean Cooking. The winner, who will be announced in July during London Climate Action Week, will receive prize funding, communications and media opportunities, and tailored support to expand their work.

LivelyHoods

LivelyHoods works to tackle chronic unemployment among youth and women in urban slums in Kenya, with a focus on clean energy distribution as a way to create jobs and generate income. Established in 2011, LivelyHoods has since distributed more than 37,000 clean cooking products and has been a key player in the growth of the clean cooking sector in Kenya.

SDG 7 Results Subsidy Facility
To help achieve a range of Sustainable Development Goals, and particularly SDG 7 on access to clean and affordable energy for all, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and RVO.nl are implementing a results-based financing scheme offering incentive payments to market actors working on renewable energy solutions in developing countries.

Modern Energy Cooking Services-Technology Research Innovation for International Development (MECS-TRIID) Competition
MECS is looking to fund early-stage research projects in support of innovative ideas or concepts that facilitate a transition to modern energy cooking services in low-income economies.

Small and Growing Business Fund
GroFin in partnership with Shell Foundation, KfW, Dutch Good Growth Fund, and Norfund are reviewing applications for a first-of-its kind, uncapped and unlimited-life fund to support small and growing businesses in Africa.
Applications must be submitted by 31 December 2021.
