Alliance Releases Stove Performance Inventory

Across the sector, there has been widespread consensus on the need for a comprehensive and transparent understanding of how current technologies and fuels perform in the laboratory and the field.  Building from this aspiration and several recommendations from the Alliance working group process (Standards and Testing, Monitoring and Evaluation, Climate, and Carbon Finance), the Alliance has released a detailed inventory of stove and fuel performance, including emissions, indoor air pollution, efficiency, fuel use, and other metrics from a range of laboratory- and field-based protocols.

This Stove Performance Inventory, developed by the Berkeley Air Monitoring Group in partnership with the Alliance and with funding from Environment Canada, contains data from over 600 sets of cookstove performance tests.  A detailed report is available in the Resources section of the Alliance’s website, which describes:

  • Stove and fuel types and geographical regions covered;
  • Systematic survey process;
  • Database framework;
  • Analysis of the data; and
  • Implications for international guidelines and standards, the carbon finance market, and the Alliance’s goals.

The Inventory will enable Alliance partners to evaluate performance on current cookstove technologies and fuels.  In addition, the Inventory allows the sector to set relevant and evidence-based standards, compare lab and field results, and improve assessment methods to achieve better standardization, comparability, and efficiency.

The Alliance plans to regularly update the Inventory to include publications in additional languages and data from new studies.  In addition, an online searchable version of the Inventory will be developed and integrated within the Data and Statistics section of the Alliance’s website.

Please contact Ranyee Chiang, rchiang@cleancookstoves.org, for a copy of the Inventory dataset or if you are interested in receiving updates about future developments.
