Mission

The progressive deforestation of approximately 500,000 acres of forest per year destroys Madagascar's natural resources and biodiversity. More than 80 percent of the cut wood is used for cooking. For these reasons, ADES promotes energy-efficient cooking methods and raises public awareness on sustainable use of natural resources and environmental protection. ADES' goal ist that by 2050 the majority of households in the African country will use energy-efficient cookstoves that use around 60 percent less energy.

Clean Cooking Activities

ADES is firmly integrated into the Malagasy industrial structure for an indefinite period of time through eight local production and distribution centers for energy-saving stoves and is registered locally with an excellent reputation. In Switzerland, ADES maintains contact with the donation base and the public. ADES is currently developing alternative forms of energy (e.g. from bio waste) for the stoves. The stoves are already being produced by incinerating plant waste products. ADES is convinced that a sustainable strengthening of the local economy with industrialized cooker production is more sustainable than individual projects and backyard production. The demand for ADES stoves continues unabated. To date, the organization has sold a total of more than 170,000 energy-saving stoves, with sales in 2017 amounting to 34,000 cooking appliances, 500 of which are solar cookers. Solar cookers are not yet being extensively adapted on site; ADES assumes, however, that more and more households recognize through their savings in energy-saving cookers that purely solar cooking could be even more worthwhile and thus become more attractive. To date, over 900,000 people have benefited from lower fuel consumption, improved indoor air quality and a lower risk of fire accidents. So far, ADES-cookers have protected over 381,000 acres of Madagascan forest. By 2017, approx. 1.3 million tons of CO2 had been compensated for with the same amount of wood saved.

Partnership

ADES could provide knowledge transfer in regard to CO2 emissions trading/certificates, design of cooking appliances, setting up an industrialized production structure in a LDC. ADES could also provide country - relevant data on Madagascar to the Alliance.
