Clean Cooking Activities
Odisha is one of the poorest state with relatively low quality of life. Household air pollution (HAP) from cooking with solid fuels could be a potential risk factor of high morbidity and moralities in the state, where two third of the population used solid biomass fuel for their energy needs. The disease burden from the HAP is a consequence of exposure to the extremely toxic pollutants produced from the household energy uses mainly for cooking or heating. Keeping this in mind there is an increasing global focus on improved cook stoves (ICS) and clean fuels arises from their potential for delivering triple dividends of (1) household health, (2) local environmental quality and (3) regional climate benefits. We are interested to evaluate how household energy use impacts the environment and public health.
Partnership
The Institute in its capacity can be able to contribute in conducting population-based surveillance studies including monitoring and evaluations. Most importantly, the existing resources will minimize the time and money for establishing local partnerships and training, allowing us to utilize the full year of funding for data collection and analysis.
The organization (AIPH) has a strong partnership with the health system and community attached in-house laboratories in two major hospitals (Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar and Ispat General Hospital, Rourkela). Further, the strength of the institute can be evident to roll-out large scale community-based implementation and research projects promptly without compromising quality. To cite some current AIPH activities: Aetiology of Neonatal Infection in South Asia - a multi-centric trans-national study overseen by CDC and funded by BMGF; secondly, Exploring the impact of sanitation and menstrual hygiene on stress and health among women – a SHARE consortium-funded, backed by DFID; thirdly, An assessment of vulnerable health sub-centers in Odisha – a UNICEF-commissioned project evaluating the governmental policy of incentivizing difficult health facilities; and the fourth project being Intervention to increase TB case detection funded by TB REACH, WHO. Projects of similar scale had been handled by AIPH for a decade and they have always been discharged with timeliness and appropriateness through its network of locally-recruited, trained and experienced field workers, supervisors and overseers.
