Clean Cooking Activities

Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RRC.AP) at Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is the lead partner of the Project Surya. This pilot study showed that by using forced draft improved cookstove 60-70 percent black carbon (BC) and other air quality and climate parameters could be reduced and provided immense opportunities for several co-benefits in terms of climate, health, and socioeconomic conditions of the people. Experience of the Project Surya could be useful in the Cookstove programme of the Global Alliance and the CCAC’s. Specifically, the RRC.AP could contribute in designing the cookstove as per the need of the local people, testing of the emissions and energy efficiency and assist in distribution at the national level in Asia- Pacific region.

RRC.AP at AIT has also served as the Secretariat of the Malé Declaration on Control and Prevention of Air Pollution and Its Likely Transboundary Effects for South Asia (Malé Declaration) which is an intergovernmental network in South Asia. The Malé Declaration could be used as a platform to underpin the cookstove programme in the national level policy making processes in South Asian countries. RRC.AP could also contribute in organizing the workshops and training programmes and in generating of awareness materials.

Partnership

The RRC.AP at AIT can participate in this partnership as a service provider and an implementing partner of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves to implement activities of the Global Alliance to promote and disseminate clean cookstove technologies in Asia and Pacific region both at the regional and country level in the area of policy development, research and development, monitoring and evaluation, capacity building, and awareness raising.
