Clean Cooking Activities
CUTS-Nairobi's clean cooking activities included research, policy advocacy, capacity building and creation of awareness.
• Research: CUTS has been conducting research on cleaner and renewable fuels for cooking and lighting. This is in Kajiado, Homa Bay and Bomet Counties. So far, the project is being piloted in these areas.
We would like to, in future look into extending our research to more counties and even other countries.
• Capacity building and awareness creation: Currently, the organization is in talks with key stakeholders at national, county and local level. These stakeholders are drawn from various sectors that have a hand in the clean energy chain. The goal is to facilitate the training of local leaders and consumer groups on the use clean fuels for cooking, to encourage them to make a shift from using fuels such as charcoal and firewood.
Given the importance of training and creating awareness on alternative sources of energy, CUTS hopes to take on training initiatives in more counties and regions in order to promote the uptake of clean and renewable sources of energy.
• Policy advocacy: CUTS does policy advocacy on consumer issues. As of now, while the organization has been called upon to give inputs on policy documents at national level that are geared towards promoting the use of clean energy, the main focus is at county level. Here, CUTS hopes to be able to give inputs as counties look to develop policies around clean renewable energy uptake.
Partnership
CUT Nairobi, as a consumer organization and will be instrumental to the overall goal of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves in the following ways:
• CUTS is conversant with evidence generation in the energy sector, having conducted baseline surveys to gauge the energy use in different parts of the country. The goal of these surveys has been to measure the uptake of clean renewable energy sources and existing barriers. In this regard, CUTS will be beneficial to the evidence creation aspect of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, as we have a deep understanding of the region and factors influencing the uptake of energy.
• Awareness creation to consumers, which is another of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves mission, is another area that CUTS has vast experience in. One of the organization’s current projects, on the uptake of clean renewable energy, involves this, in which the organization aims to facilitate awareness creation initiatives to the consumer, community leaders, and relevant policy makers.
• Finally, CUTS, engages in policy advocacy around issues that touch on consumers. The organization has influenced and given inputs in policies at both National and County levels. The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, in Kenya, will be coming into an environment in which most Counties are only just beginning to formulate policies that are specific to energy uptake. What CUTS offers to the partnership is experience in policy advocacy that is centered on the evidence generated, as explained in above.
